Boys basketball: Northwick shoots Irish past Burnsville
Rosemount Minnesota P.O. Box 192 / 312 Oak St. 55024

The hot shooting of Cole Northwick sparked Rosemount to its second South Suburban Conference win of the season last Tuesday.

Northwick knocked down 6 of 10 shots from beyond the three-point arc en route to a season-high 20 points as the Irish pulled away from winless Burnsville 71-52 at Irish Gym.

"Cole Northwick shot the ball very well and our energy was very good," Rosemount coach Bryan Schnettler said. "A lot of guys were able to contribute to our win."

After scoring a combined 41 points in the first halves of losses to Eastview and Eagan last week, the Irish put up 41 in the first 18 minutes against the Blaze and took a 15-point lead into the break.

While Northwick was lighting it up from the outside, the 1-2 punch of Matt Nelson and Brandon Forcier was having its way in the paint. Nelson scored 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked three shots and Forcier scored 15 points (on 7 of 8 shooting) and snagged 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Charlie Broback knocked down a pair of threes and finished with nine points. Garrett Goetz and Jordan Tumilson each handed out four assists.

Scoring didn't come as easy in Thursday's home game against third-ranked (Class 4A) Lakeville North. The Panthers held the Irish to 18 first-half points and improved to 15-1 with a 60-45 victory at Irish Gym.

Despite the loss, Schnettler was happy with his team's performance.

"I loved our effort and how hard we played against Lakeville North. They are a tough physical team and we matched them in both areas. We just were not able to finish as many plays as they were down the stretch," he said. "If we play with the energy and effort that we did against Lakeville North for the rest of conference play we will win a lot more games the second time around."

Nelson finished with a team-high 16 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots. Goetz scored eight points and Forcier scored seven.

The Irish (8-8) are back in action this week with games against No. 6 Apple Valley (Tuesday)?and Bloomington Jefferson (Friday)
