Boys basketball: Irish looking to change luck in tournament
Rosemount is a streaky shooting team, and head coach Bryan Schnettler is hoping his team can start a new streak in the Section 3AAAA tournament.
The Irish closed out the regular season by posting their lowest point total in more than eight years in a 71-31 loss to Prior Lake Friday night at Irish Gym. They shot just 22 percent, got to the free-throw line just twice and only scored 11 points in the second half.
"Prior Lake played a zone and they have two guys over 6-10. We struggled to score in the paint and we rushed some jump shots," Schnettler said.
Sean Kalinowski led Rosemount with eight points.
The loss left the Irish with a regular-season record of 7-19. That earned them a matchup with 18-8 East Ridge in the opening round of the section playoffs Wednesday night.
"East Ridge is a very solid team. They have some guards that shoot the ball well and two 6-8 guys that can score in the post," Schnettler said. "It is a new season and everyone is 0-0. We are very much looking forward to the challenge and we will be ready to go."
The Irish will be looking for the shooting touch they found last Tuesday when they canned 11 three-pointers in a 64-61 road win at Bloomington Kennedy.
Cole Northwick knocked down four of those threes and finished with 14 points. Garrett Goetz also scored 14 points and handed out six assists.
"We had some guys step up and hit some big threes and we made enough stops down the stretch to win,"?Schnettler said.
Logan Halvorson added 12 points -- including three three-pointers -- and Jeremy Macchitelli and Jack Kessler each dropped in nine. Kessler also hauled in a team-high five rebounds and Sam Broback chipped in four.
