Boys basketball: Irish can't close vs. South, Prior Lake
Rosemount Minnesota P.O. Box 192 / 312 Oak St. 55024

Rosemount saw late leads slip away in both of its South Suburban Conference games last week.

The Irish saw a 10-point second-half lead disappear in a 52-50 home loss to Prior Lake last Monday at Irish Gym. The same thing happened Friday at Lakeville South as the Cougars overcame a double-figure deficit in the second half to force overtime and earn a 65-63 win.

"Both games were mirror images of each other. We started playing not to lose instead of going out there and finishing the game and playing to win," Rosemount coach Bryan Schnettler said. "We are looking for guys that want to have the ball in their hand at the end of the game and be the one responsible for our team winning and losing."

Turnovers proved costly Friday night in Lakeville. Twenty-seven giveaways negated an offensive performance where the Irish shot 50 percent from the floor and made eight three-pointers.

"We did some very good things in both games," Schnettler said. "We need to find a way to finish games better and the only way to do that is to continue to attack and play to win."

Matt Nelson and Cole Northwick combined for the bulk of the scoring against South. Nelson dropped in 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and Northwick hit three three-pointers en route to 19 points.

Jordan Tumilson added eight points and eight assists and Brandon Forcier scored eight points and grabbed four boards.

The Irish led 34-27 at the break, but scored just 16 points over the final 18 minutes in last Monday's loss to the Lakers.

Nelson netted another double-double, scoring a team-high 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Forcier added nine points and Northwick eight.

The Irish (9-11) hosted Bloomington Kennedy Tuesday night and are back home tomorrow night when they take on No. 1-ranked (Class 4A) Eastview at Irish Gym.
