Boys basketball: Irish blow out Blaze, 73-43
A Friday night game with 1-22 Burnsville was good therapy for a Rosemount basketball team coming off a disappointing Senior Night loss to Eagan earlier in the week.
Ten players got in the scoring column as the Irish scored 43 second-half points and rolled to a season sweep of the Blaze with a 73-43 blowout victory at Burnsville.
The team shot 45 percent, made seven three-pointers, converted on 16 of 20 tries from the free-throw line and turned the ball over just five times.
Senior Matt Nelson led the way with 17 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots. Garrett Goetz scored 11 points, Micah Marshall dropped in 10 and Keijuan Brown added nine points and seven rebounds.
A slow first half left too big of a hole for the Irish to overcome last Tuesday against Eagan. The Wildcats saw a 17-point lead dwindle down to a single point over the final seven minutes, but Rosemount couldn't complete the rally as the visitors held on for a 71-67 decision.
"We came out very flat and did not play with energy," Rosemount coach Bryan Schnettler said. "Our guys know by now that we need to play for a full 36 minutes to win in our conference and we did not do that."
The Irish got back into the game thanks to improved second-half defense and their 11 three-pointers. Marshall (11 points) and Cole Northwick (nine points) each connected on three from long range and Nelson drilled two threes en route to 17 points. Nelson also grabbed seven rebounds and handed out six assists.
Rosemount (11-13) closed out the regular season with two tough games this week. The Irish played at second-ranked (Class 4A) Lakeville North Tuesday and are at No. 5 Apple Valley tomorrow night.
The Section 3AAAA tourney gets under way next week.
