Baseball: Smith sets down Simley in 3AAA
Ben Smith came up big for Rosemount in his first section tournament start.
The junior pitcher held visiting Simley to one earned run over 6 1/3 innings as the Irish advanced to the second round of the Section 3AAA tournament with a 3-2 victory last Friday.
Smith allowed just four hits and walked none while striking out five. A hit and an error in the top of the seventh made it a one-run game, but Luke Dahl came on in relief and got the final two outs to pick up the save.
Rosemount scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the second. Carl Waite started the rally with a one-out single. Chris Bauer followed with a walk and both runners came around to score on a triple to right by Cole Northwick. Brian Rogers followed with a base hit to make it 3-0.
Northwick finished 2 for 3 and Waite, Rogers and Dahl each added a hit apiece.
The Irish (10-9) took on sixth-ranked Eastview in the second round last Tuesday at Alimagnet Park in Burnsville.
