Coaches always hope to enter the postseason tournaments on some kind of winning note.
That's exactly what the Rosemount Irish baseball team did with a 7-3 win this week over Lakeville South.
"It was nice to get a win going into the playoffs," RHS assistant coach Wayne Krantz said. "We played pretty good defense, and we hit the ball well."
Ben Lemke got his first start of the season and threw five strong innings. Blake Schwartz came on in relief and finished the job for the Irish.
Mark Radmacher, Schwartz, Lemke, Dylan Porter and Matt Buss led the Irish at the plate.
As for that section tournament, the Irish were set to begin play at 5:30 p.m. last night (Thursday) against Faribault. Rosemount has the No. 7 seed and Faribault is the No. 10.
The second round of games is planned for Saturday in Rochester. Rochester John Marshall (the No. 2 seed) and Albert Lea (the No. 15 seed) are also in Rosemount's sub-section. The double-elimination sub-section tournament concludes Monday in Rochester.
If Rosemount can advance through the sub-section, they'll play in the section's Final Four tournament next weekend in Red Wing.
Rosemount lost to Eastview last week, 5-2.
Rosemount led going into the seventh inning, 2-0, but the Lightning put five runs on the board to beat the Irish.
"They got some key hits, then the floodgates opened," Krantz said.
