Janice Ladendorf has two loves -- horses and writing. Fortunately for her, she's been able to combine the two for more than 50 years.

Most recently the Eagan-based author came out with a historical western titled Heart of a Falcon. The coming of age story follows 14-year-old Lisbet McTavish as she embarks on a quest in 1830. A tomboy, Lisbet is imaginative and lonely. Lisbet also has a hidden heritage that links her to the spirit world of Native Americans. When she and her father are forced to leave their home, Lisbet longs to find friends and the silver mustang she has ridden in her dreams.

To write the book, Ladendorf had to do a lot of research. Not a lot has been written about the 1830s, and Ladendorf wanted to make sure the information she presented was historically accurate. For example, in the novel, Ladendorf talks about a network to help escaped slaves. Many would identify that as the Underground Railroad but the term did not exist at that time.

Additionally, Ladendorf had to do a lot of research on Native American tribes as part of the book. The research included learning about the Osage tribe, which Ladendorf found fascinating.

Ladendorf will present at 6:30 p.m. May 15 at the Robert Trail Library. During her presentation, Ladendorf will talk about the historical research she did for the book and share some of the interesting details she learned about the time period.

"I learned a lot," said Ladendorf.

The Rosemount Area Arts Council and The Robert Trail Library are co-sponsoring the event as part of their author lecture series. Other authors have drawn large crowds.

In addition to the Heart of a Falcon, Ladendorf also self published A Marvelous Mustang. The book is a memoir written from the horse's point of view. The book follows the first four years of his life.

Ladendorf said the book has sold well, so she plans to shop it around to publishing companies.

Going forward, Ladendorf has more stories about horses she's working on.

"I've always been crazy about horses and I like what I do," said Ladendorf.
