Michael St. Ores usually likes to draw people, but it was a sketch of birds and other woodland creatures that has earned him recognition in a statewide contest sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

St. Ores, a sixth grader at Rosemount Middle School, finished fourth while competing against seventh graders in the contest. He was the only student in Independent School District 196 to win anything.

St. Ores found out about his prize Tuesday morning. RMS art teacher Teryl Peterson handed over a packed filled with a booklet on critters, wildlife magazines and a certificate that will get him free tickets to next year's Minnesota Deer Classic and Sports Show.

"I'm excited," he said.

The theme of this year's contest was Roadsides are for the Birds. St. Ores' pencil sketch features birds and other wildlife.

"I just kind of went with some of the birds and animals I knew about," St. Ores said.
