Annual book sale supports library

Got a case of bibliophilia and need a fix? The Friends of the Robert Trail Library have got it for you.

FORT will hold their fourth annual book sale April 23-27.

FORT President Jo Gilbertson said organizers decided to add one more day to the event this year to give shoppers more opportunity to come. FORT members will have first crack at the books Wednesday, April 23 from 4 to 8 p.m. Non-members can join FORT at the door for $10 and attend the preview event.

The book sale will officially open to the public at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 24 and will run until 8 p.m. The sale will continue Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 3 p.m. Gilbertson said the event will conclude with a bag sale, in which people can fill a bag with books for $3.

The sale will feature thousands of books, DVDs and other materials representing a wide range of interests including fiction, non-fiction, large print, history, travel, cooking and more. Additionally, a large selection of children’s books will be available.

Gilbertson said they have been collecting books all year long and FORT’s storage unit is brimming with books. They also have books sitting in a member’s garage. FORT receives book donations from individuals as well as from other Dakota County libraries turning books over.

“People have been very generous with us,” said Gilbertson.

If you’ve ever seen the small brochures for the Friends of the Robert Trail Library and wondered what they do, here is a small list.

FORT’s main function is to support the library through funding, programming and volunteerism.

“We support library projects and activities that do not come out of their regular budget,” said Gilbertson.

The group also supports the community. FORT has helped put on events including the Star Wars Extravaganza, One Book One Rosemount, Leprechaun Days and the Haunted Woods Trail.

Coming up, the group has pledged support to One Tile, One Rosemount, a community art project that will be installed in the library lobby.

The friends accomplish a lot on a tight budget that mostly comes from the annual Friends of the Robert Trail Library Book Sale. The group has raised around $3,000 each year they’ve held a book sale.

Gilbertson said they have a dedicated core group of volunteers who work hard to make it all happen. They could always use more, though, and Gilbertson said anyone who wants to join is welcome.

FORT meets at 6:30 p.m. the second Monday of the month in the Robert Trail Library meeting room. For more information call Jo Gilbertson at 651—344-2074 or email at
