Deborah Lysholm owns Heartbeat Studios, and is helping facilitate the visit from the dance troupe including several performances in Rosemount.

The group was originally scheduled to perform in Rosemount Jan. 24 but some paperwork problems delayed the performance. Lysholm said the dancers were at the airport when they learned about the issues.

Kika is a renowned African Fusion dance troupe. The group includes elements of each Ugandan tribe. According to the Kika Troupe website the troupe uses its trademark drums and a blend of dances to celebrate Ugandan culture.

The troupe features 15 dancers, drummers and singers and emcee Kaddu Yusuf. Yusuf started the dance troupe in 2004. In addition to providing a professional career Kika also houses the dancers in a compound.

The dance troupe has toured globally including in Japan and Europe. This will be their first visit to the United States. The troupe will do a number of performances while in Minnesota. After their time here, the group will fly to Salt Lake City and then Seattle.

Coming to Minnesota in February will likely be a shock for members of the Kika Troupe. Most of the members of the dance troupe have never seen snow. In fact, Lysholm said most have only worn flip flops.

Lysholm said when she asked why they would want to come to Minnesota in winter, they responded that they want to know what it’s like to dance in a refrigerator.

To provide proper clothing for the group while they are here, Lysholm’s dance studio conducted a clothing drive.

For the general public, Kika Troupe will perform at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Steeple Center. The event is free, but free will donations will be accepted. The group will also perform at Diamond Path Elementary School.
