Bringing INSANITIY to Rosemount

Clockwise from lower right, Nickie Carrigan, Mary Maloy, Marc Carrigan and Paul Theisen recently attended a training to become certified Insanity instructors.

Beachbody markets the Shaun T INSANITY program as the hardest fitness program ever put on DVD, which for many makes it seem intimidating. But Rosemount fitness instructor Nickie Carrigan and her team believes just about anyone can do the program with a few modifications. She hopes to prove that point by bringing a studio version of the popular DVD series to Rosemount.

"This is something everyone can do," Carrigan said of the program.

Nickie, her husband Marc Carrigan and friend Paul Theisen recently became some of the first certified INSANITY instructors in the area. Together the three will offer classes to the community.

INSANITY is best known as a 60-day home DVD program. The program was created by Shaun T, a former athlete and personal trainer.

The popular workout recently made the jump from infomercial product to American Council of Exercise-sanctioned fitness program, though. Nickie Carrigan said the goal was to offer the intense, cardio-based conditioning program, with the added security of pairing it with hands-on instruction.

Excited to offer the program, Carrigan said while it's an intense workout, it's also a fitness program created to help people succeed. She said the program shows people how to exercise with their own body and offers ways to improve.

"It's fun to watch the progression people make as they go through it," she said.

Theisen said a lot of people have had success with the DVDs, which is why they are popular. As such, the American Council on Exercise decided to create a version appropriate for a gym or studio setting. Theisen said the ACE accreditation gives the program credibility.

As instructors, Marc Carrigan said they will have the ability to take the essentials of the program and customize to the needs of each class. The exercises are something anyone can do and the program offers modifications to help people succeed.

While INSANITY may seem intimidating, Marc said after people have tried it once, they usually come back for more.

"We really want to make sure we approach it so people at every fitness level can do it. We want to make people feel good," said Marc.

A longtime fitness instructor, Nickie has offered boot camp classes at Northwest Martial Arts for several years and said she's excited to bring this new program to the community. She gave her boot camp class a glimpse of the program and said the reaction to it was positive.

"They all loved it," she said.

While Nickie is a full-time fitness professional, Marc and Paul both have careers in other fields and are teaching the class part-time.

Marc, who works in the wine business, said people with busy professional careers and family still need to make health and fitness a priority. With INSANITY, he said, that is possible.

"I want to show other dads that it's possible to be in the best shape of your life at 36, 37 or 38," said Marc.

While the details are still being ironed out Nickie said those interested can email her at or check out her website at
