Nivala and Company reaching out with monthlong food drive

Drop off a food item at Nivala and Company Salon and have your name entered into a drawing for prizes.

People share all sorts of things when they're sitting in the stylist's chair. Some are happy, such as engagements or births. Others are heart wrenching, such as a friend struggling with poverty.

"We have the opportunity to hear what's going on in people's lives," said Sara Nivala, owner of Nivala and Company salon.

What's become clear to Nivala lately is that there are people in the community struggling. Nivala said clients have shared some harrowing stories. So, Nivala and her staff have set out do something about it with the Giving is Beautiful campaign.

"We figured the community has been great to us. It is our responsibility and honor to help," said Nivala.

In May, the first month of the campaign, the salon has focused on helping the 360 Communities Rosemount Family Resource Center, which runs a community food shelf. The salon will take non-perishable food donations as well as pet items to donate to the center.

"We want to collect enough to make a difference," Nivala said.

In the first few days of the food drive the salon collected several boxes of food and Nivala hopes more people will drop off donations. The family resource center serves more than 600 people a month, half of whom are children.

Nivala said while any donation is great she encouraged people to think about the smallest members of the family. She said baby food and formula are particularly needed. Additionally pet food is needed.

"There are so many stories out there about pets being left behind. People are being forced to choose between feeding their child or animal," said Nivala.

To sweeten the pot, Nivala will give away prizes. Each item donated is worth one entry. There is no limit to the number of entries. Prizes include a spa day, a foil and haircut and a product-filled gift bag.

Going forward, Nivala hopes the salon can help more local organizations. She said each month the salon will take on a Giving is Beautiful project. She is open to suggestions about where to give.

To make a donation just drop it by the salon. Nivala and Company Salon is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
