Company offers gourmet, locally sourced dog treats

Colin Murray, Karen Compton and Jamie Compton started Barkley's Bistro. The company uses locally sourced ingredients to make dog treats.

Three things are important to know about Colin Murray, Jamie Compton and Karen Compton. They love dogs, they believe in the locavore movement and they are motivated. Combine those and you get a successful business idea.

This year the trio created Barkley's Bistro. Barkley's produces gourmet dog treats that are chef-inspired and handmade in small batches. All the ingredients in the treats are locally produced by Minnesota and Wisconsin farmers, Jamie said. In addition, Barkley's delivers their product by bicycle.

"We are inspired by the locavore movement and are hitting the food conscience," Jamie said.

A self-professed dog lover, Karen said she has always been mindful of what she feeds her dogs. The Rosemount woman said providing quality treats that even people can eat makes sense to her.

"There's great benefit to the pets," Karen said.

Murray, a trained chef, comes up with the recipes for the dog treats. Some of the treats offered include chick'n cheddar biscuits, peanut butter buttons and duck confit and cranberry bones.

The duck confit is the Bone du Jour and features ingredients from Wild Acres Duck, Gardens of Eagan & The Wedge Co-op.

All of the recipes are gluten free and the peanut butter buttons are vegetarian.

"Our dogs are members of our family, and should be rewarded with the best treats money can buy. Simply delicious, free of fillers and made with love.... creating Barkley's Bistro treats make me proud to be a chef," Murray said on the company's website.

Jamie and Karen bake the treats in the commercial kitchen of a restaurant in Minneapolis. The mother and daughter said they have fun baking the treats and they enjoy seeing their happy customers eat them up.

The trio started Barkley's Bistro last February. In the beginning they thought it would be a fun summer project but the business has quickly become a success.

Barkley's is now available at pet shops and boutiques around the Twin Cities, including Bone Adventure, Bubbly Paws, The Golden Fig, The Wedge Co-op, Love from Minnesota and the Linden Hills Co-op.

The success they have experienced has made them dream big for the future. Jamie said she hopes they can bring the concept into other markets.

"We would like to take the business model other places," said Jamie.

Whatever the future might hold, the trio is enjoying the success of Barkley's Bistro.

"It's been fun," said Jamie.
