Business aims to help seniors

Victor Fricano has spent the majority of his professional life working for major corporations. While it paid the bills, most of the time he spent working wasn't very fulfilling.

Then in March the Rosemount resident decided to take a leap. He bought a franchise of a company called Seniors Helping Seniors. Through it he hopes to continue to pay the bills, but to be satisfied in what he does, too.

"Ultimately I'm in this to help people," said Fricano.

Seniors Helping Seniors is an innovative company that supports seniors with their non-medical needs through other seniors the company hires to do the services. The in-home services provided range from trimming hedges to preparing meals to transportation to medical appointments to providing companionship.

"The goal is to help seniors stay in their homes as long as possible," said Fricano.

The company hires seniors to complete the tasks. Fricano said the concept of seniors aiding one another works because the people hired really want to help. And the people who need help have someone they feel comfortable with.

"A lot of people do want to help," said Fricano.

All the seniors hired go through background checks. The people hired can work as much or as little as they like and Fricano said the company offers a competitive wage. The seniors who work with Seniors Helping Seniors help others remain independent.

"We are looking for people with big hearts.... We are always looking for people," said Fricano.

While he's only been with the company a short time, Fricano said he enjoys helping people on a daily basis. He's not a senior but often he will lend a hand if needed.

"I want to make sure people are receiving the help they need," said Fricano.

Fricano's formal territory is the suburbs North of St. Paul, but seeing as there is only one other branch in the Twin Cities Fricano serves most of the area south of the river including Rosemount.

Seniors Helping Seniors was started in 1998 by a woman named Kiran Yocum. The company began as a small operation in Reading, Penn. and has since grown to have a presence in more than 40 states with 150 offices around the country.
