Creating dishes and living dreams

Chef Cory Franzmeier, a former Rosemount High School student, has started Gourmet Solutions. The company offers catering and personal chef services.

Life has thrown some wrenches at Cory Franzmeier the past few years. Personal and professional struggles have taken a toll, but Franzmeier is a fighter.

As part of that fight, Franzmeier has decided to pursue a dream to become a chef and start his own business. Franzmeier started Gourmet Solutions this past spring. The company offers event catering and personal chef services.

While he works full time at the University of Minnesota as a chef, Franzmeier hopes his future will be in Gourmet Solutions. Currently the business specializes in box lunches and deli trays for events. Offerings include sandwiches, wraps, salads, appetizers and party platters. Franzmeier offers variety, including different meats and breads and vegetarian options. Gourmet Solutions also caters barbeques and hog roasts.

"I want to help make memorable events for people," said Franzmeier.

While the main focus is to feed people, Franzmeier likes to make his creation look beautiful.

"It's a way for me to create and be artistic," said Franzmeier.

Franzmeier also offers personal chef services in which he cooks a set amount of meals for clients. The items then go into the fridge or freezer. Client can heat it up later for a quick gourmet meal.

As part of that service Franzmeier does all the shopping, cooking and clean up. Each meal includes an entrée and a side dish. And Franzmeier offers a large array of items with flavors from around the world. He offers dishes such as Parmesan crusted chicken, cranberry apple pork tenderloin or Indian lamb curry and vegetarian options such as lasagna Florentine and Turkish Stuffed Peppers.

Starting over

Like many have done lately, Franzmeier is starting a second career. Before going to the Culinary Institute of America, Franzmeier helped run a family-owned therapeutic horse facility.

A family illness forced the business to close and Franzmeier was forced to look at other options. Having always been a foodie and his family's go-to cook Franzmeier decided to become a chef.

Since becoming a chef, he has cooked for the St. James Hotel, the Ritz Carlton and Marriot International. While he's glad for the experience, Franzmeier said he's an entrepreneur at heart.

"I want to bring my culinary experience and creations to the town I grew up in," said Franzmeier.

While his future is still uncertain Franzmeier said he's excited to start this opportunity.

"I am doing what I love and providing good quality food for people," he said with a smile.
