Boys basketball: Irish fall short in section opener

There were no surprises awaiting the Rosemount boys basketball team in the first round of this season’s playoffs. The Irish received the No. 5 seed and faced No. 4 seed Eastview on Wednesday in the Class 4A, Section 3 tournament. The two teams met up twice during the regular season. The Lightning won 56-41 in the regular-season finale for both teams last week.

One of Rosemount’s boys swimmers and divers offered a poignant message last week as the Irish prepared for the section meet. On the board at the Rosemount pool, it was written, “Teamwork makes dreams work.”

Gymnastics: Murgic caps off standout career at state meet

Rosemount senior gymnast Katie Murgic fell on her opening vault at last week’s Class 2A state gymnastics meet. Preparing for her second and final vault, Murgic got a simple message from Irish coach Jason Passeri. The vault would be her final event as a Rosemount gymnast. “He told me, ‘This is your last vault ever. Don’t leave anything to regret. Land on your feet,’” Murgic recalled.

For Rosemount wrestling coach Brett Larson, the Irish results in the Class 2A, Section 3 individual tournament were very fitting. Rosemount failed to advance any wrestlers to this week’s state tournament. The Irish again showed well, but fell short in the end.

Three middle school sports targeted for elimination

Football, baseball and softball players at Rosemount Middle School will have to find new teams for the 2010-11 school year. A task force formed last August to study middle school sports has recommended responsibility for those sports be shifted to community athletic organizations. Fees will go up for the sports that remain.

Deputy will fill in for departing sheriff

In the end there was no surprise appointment. At its regular meeting Tuesday, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners, on a unanimous vote, appointed Dakota County Chief Deputy Dave Bellows sheriff, replacing Don Gudmundson, whose resignation is effective Sunday. The board also officially accepted Gudmundson’s resignation.
